Review for Roosevelt, a Revolutionary with Common Sense
Helmut Magers’ reflection on Franklin Roosevelt’s handling of the daunting challenges to American society posed by the Great Depression provide a remarkable prescient, and hitherto overlooked, contemporary German perspective on the relevance of the New Deal to a world in crisis. Combining an astute assessment of Roosevelt’s political skills and a detailed account of the economic policies his administration pursued in its early days in power, Magers implicitly suggests that the common sense revolution they were pursuing might serve as a model for Germany and other strife-ridden societies thrown into turmoil by the collapse of the global capitalist system.
